Print research

I found some prints created by 'Raw Colour' who are a design company in the Netherlands, they describe their work saying it "reflects a sophisticated treatment of material and colour by mixing the fields of graphic design and photography. This is embodied through research and experiments, building their visual language." The work I found was made for a food design studio called 'Keukenconfessies' who asked for a log that could change. 'Raw colour' created a range of food shapes, "some more abstract than others" that could be used in almost endless combinations. Each food item is printed separately with some on translucent paper so that they can be overlaid to make new combinations. They also made business cards with a stamp to make them "rough and playful".
I really like both the concept and execution of this project. They have created a brand that manages to maintain individuality, creativity, playfulness and a hand made feel. Not only are these illustrations beautifully designed but they communicate the brands identity. They manage to balance playful hand made branding with a feeling of professionalism, anyway I think I should talk more about this on my PPP blog.

The shapes and colours in these illustrations are all important, especially given that they are designed to work together in any combination and any composition. the designer cannot know how the illustrated shapes will be used so can only try and simplify the shapes down to the prefect, simplified representation of the food item. I would love to try and design something like this for a book but the introduction of any kind of narrative however simple would probably fall apart pretty quickly. Beautiful overlapping textures and colours and plenty to think about!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
